Differences Between American and Mexican schools for the deaf

This type of schools was made because deaf people learn differently because of their condition. In this schools, teachers have the ability to speak ASL (American Sign Language) / LSM (Mexican Sign language) or have an interprete( only in the US) , sadly I have noticed that American schools for the deaf have better opportunities of intellectual growth than the Mexican ones , so I decided to show the differences from each one to compare like the methods that they use to teach deaf kids in these schools, but first I would like to share general methods that teachers use to teach.

  • they use body language and facial expressions to attract their students instead of using the tone of their voice

  • they gesticulate their words more than usual but not in an exaggerated way to communicate

  • they use simple examples to teach a concept

  • they draw in the board to explain themselves better

  • they write words that they do not know and then explain

  • clap and wave their arms if students are not paying attention

  • always ask if they understand in everything they say

Classes.

Mexican schools

  • The use of boards, and repeating themselves is a must.

  • the accommodate the chairs or the students in a half moon for them to catch the class content

American schools

  • they use videos to show examples

  • they play games with puzzles

  • they adapt the classes for the student’s way of understanding.

  • If the school is mostly for hearing people they have an interpreter to explain for him the class and ask questions.

Mexican schools

  • They use lights instead of the bell that announces the end of a class

  • They have schedule class until 5pm approximately (for vocal training)

  • They have flag ceremonies entirely in sign language

American schools

  • They have boarding schools for deaf people

  • They have extracurricular activities like theater class, football and regularization for the ones who are struggling in school.

In my opinion, the Mexican schools should include interpreters for deaf kids that happened to be in an all hearing school and make more known the existences of these schools I think that we should make a trip to a deaf school in the future.
