September 16th
Mexico is celebrating its Independence Day on September 16. This is a day of tradition and pride for all Mexicans.
The highlight of this day occurs at midnight when the president reenacts the famous speech given by Father Hidalgo and exclaims 'Viva Mexico' from the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City. Every city or town will witness the same event hosted by their city representative. Parades, fireworks, dances and Mexican folk attire and flags are another way of Mexico showing its pride this is by far one of the most festive events in Mexico, tradition has been carried on for many years.
One of the most important parts of this tradition is to celebrate with food and drinks typical of the region. Some of these dishes include chile en nogada, pozole, bambazos, sopes and tostadas de tinga. These dishes are typical in the central part of the country like Mexico City. In northern Mexico people are more likely to celebrate with red meat derived from goat, pig or cow. Along with the food we must have beverages both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Drinks made with fresh fruit such as jamica, horchata, lime and tamarindo, to name a few, are very popular. The typical alcoholic beverages consumed among adults are tequila, beer, margaritas and pulque. Mexicans enjoy their food and drinks accompanied by family and friends.
Mexicans living out of the country will celebrate in whichever country they reside, such as the United States, France, Spain and Canada. So no matter where you are, if you are Mexican the day has come for you to celebrate your country’s independence with all these great traditions.
