Educators in California send West Virginian protesters free pizza
A teacher union in California raised thousands of dollars, from March 4th, to the 6th, using online crowdfunding to buy pizza and water for teachers protesting a law reducing their salary increase in West Virginia to eat, supporting their cause and their protests.
West Virginia public school teachers have rallied for several days asking the Senate to backtrack an amended pay raise bill lowering the raise for teachers and service personnel from 5 percent to 4 percent. Union leaders said Saturday that the strike will continue indefinitely until the 5 percent raise is passed.
24 hours after creating the funding campaign, it has raised more than $9,600, just hundreds shy of their $10,000 dollar goal, as of 10 a.m. Monday. Later Monday afternoon, that goal had been raised to $15,000 -- with nearly $11,000 raised.
The California union explains that the money will go toward pizza and water for thousands of West Virginia educators protesting at the West Virginia Capitol. They say educators on the ground have said the food will help more people stay through the day at the Capitol complex and continue to rally for their demands, better insurance rates and better pay.
