Guadalajara petitions to have a street named after Guillermo del Toro
On the week of January 8th, a Change.org user named Octavio Alejandro Mesa Orozco created a petition to have a street on the state of Jalisco named after Guillermo del Toro, successful and critically acclaimed Mexican film director, screenwriter, producer, and novelist, who was born on its capital, Guadalajara, in 1964. According to the petition letter: “... [del Toro] has accomplished more than enough for film and society to deserve a homage from his native city by naming one of its roads on his honor...]”.
As of January 23rd, the petition has more than 5,000 signatures. If it collects enough, it will be presented to Guadalajara’s mayor, Enrique Alfaro. The letter also reads: “... If many streets are named for political reasons and without clear popular consent, this would be a great opportunity to show to a ‘tapatío’ who gives international pride to Guadalajara.”
Del Toro’s latest movie, The Shape of Water, has 13 Oscar nominations and won Golden Globes for Best Director and Best Original Score.
