2024 and 2028 Olympic Games host cities confirmed
We already knew since 2013 that Tokyo would be the bidding city for the Olympic Games in 2020. But we now know which will be the 2024 and 2028 bidding cities.
Since September 2015, five candidate cities were announced by the International Olympic Committee: Budapest (Hungary), Hamburg (Germany), Los Angeles, Paris, and Rome. But the process was full of withdrawals; for example, Hamburg withdrew its bid on November 2015, Rome did it on September 2016 and Budapest withdrew its bid in February 2017. So the decisions are taken and now in 2024, the bidding city is set to be Paris and Los Angeles in 2028.
On March 2017, the International Olympic Committee evaluation team finished a review of those two bids, Los Angeles and Paris. The team praised these two candidates for creativity and strong legacy focus. After the withdrawal of 6 cities of both the Winter Olympic Games 2022 and the Olympic Games themselves, securing the future of the games was a priority. In fact, at the IOC convention in Denmark in April 2017, officials discussed the possibility of naming two winners to host just the 2024 Olympic Games.
On June 2017, the IOC Executive Brand discussed in Lausanne, Switzerland the 2024 and 2028 processes, and it was here were that the Committee decided to elect at the same time the hosts of 2024 and 2028 at the same time during the next IOC meeting. The IOC set up a process where Los Angeles, Paris and the IOC themselves would discuss who would win the host that year. Both Paris and Los Angeles won and welcomed the double-hosting decision.
